As you know, our mission here at Christ Church is to make, mature and multiply disciples of Jesus Christ through the power of the Holy Spirit for the glory of God. In recent months I have shared testimonies about new disciples that God has made at Christ Church and people that God is maturing at Christ Church. Today, I want to tell you about how God is multiplying at Christ Church.
We are starting a new small group in the Whitman neighborhood of South Philly that is going to be led by Matt and Jess Slingerland. Now, what’s the big deal about starting a new small group? First, this multiplication of a new small group represents how God has been growing our church. We don’t get too caught up in numbers here at Christ Church. I am pretty bad at math and try to steert away from numerical things as best I can. However, numbers do represent people and souls, so they do matter. This past year we have almost tripled the number of people connected to Christ Church. Because of this, we need to expand our small group ministry, so that our groups can actually stay small to facilitate meaningful fellowship. So this new small group is an example of God’s blessing of gospel mission through our church.
Second, we are purposefully starting this small group in a neighborhood that is twice the distance away from our building than any other small group. The reason for this is very intentional and strategic. We want to keep Christ Church a small and intimate community, because we believe this is the best type of church to reach our urban context. And so, as we grow, we want to start a lot more churches here in South Philly. One of the ways that we believe that God can do that is through taking a small group and having it grow over time into a church. I don’t know if that is what is going to happen with the Whitman small group or not, but we are purposefully starting it in a place where it could grow into a church. Regardless of whether that ends up happening or not, it is very exciting to even be taking a step in that direction!
Christ Church, our growth is only possible because of your faithful prayers and efforts to reach our friends with the good news of Jesus Christ.
To God be the glory and let’s keep going at it!
